  •  No negotiation ever succeeded in public. (3+ / 0-)

Every successful diplomatic or legislative negotiation has happened behind closed doors, because nobody could ever justify giving an inch with their hardcore supporters watching every move. Appearing to consider another point of view looks weak in front of cameras.  Giving ground has to happen in private.

That's why the public Madrid Mideast peace talks were a sham, with the real negotiations between the PLO and Israel taking place in secret in Norway.  That's why China and the U.S. bashed each other in public while Nixon and Mao made plans for peace. It just has to happen that way.

Obama was being disingenuous when he called for CSPAN negotiations during the campaign, and Boehner's a cynical hypocrite for calling him on it and then balking at doing it.

    •  Use trials as your guide (0+ / 0-)

The prosecutor and defense need to be able to converse in private at various points, to work things out.  But once the sausage is made, it all has to go out for the jury to see.

It's a fine line, but I think we're on the side of needing more sunshine, not less.
