      here does not mean ultimate scientific knowledge of the physical universe, it means the felt human experience of the human condition. For the school of psychoanalysis that Becker is working in, that means a psychic struggle with the inevitability of death and likely futility that leads to transferences - such as religion - that can break down when they become too weak to repel the fear of death or meaninglessness. This isn't physical science, but that doesn't mean it's not valid and valuable for much human experience - if, that is, human experience outside of science is of any value ...
