  •  I'm not a big fan of zoos, rescue shelters (0+ / 0-)

high fence hunting, and all those other euphamisms for jail.

It allows for people to get close to animals that they never would  have a chance to otherwise. If there were no captive animals people would be forced to preserve habitat where for every large picturesque animal there are hundreds of other just as deserving but not as cudly species to be saved.

Of course this is all just something to talk about. Climate change should probably do a better job of species extinction than all the habitat loss up to now.

I know PETA is looked on as some kind of rad org, but I agree with thier outlook on captive animals.

    •  For the great cats, it's rescue or death. (4+ / 0-)

Big Cat Rescue has saved hundreds of great cats from death. They sterilize the animals so they can't reproduce.

At least they offer the cats a decent life. I agree with you about zoos and most shelters. But when it comes to life or death, I want the cats to have the opportunity to live out their lives.

Breeding great cats in captivity should be outlawed, as should their importation. Great cats do not belong in captivity.

I've been, they are very clear that they don't want to have to have the cats in cages, would rather not need to exist, but because of the situation that is how they have to be.

The "catatats" all have signs that say something like "Someone thought I'd be a great pet, and now I am living out my life in jail."

They do good work and you are so right that it's rescue or death.  Part of their educational mission is to try to get people to understand that.
