  •  He's what is known as (6+ / 0-)

a loss leader. He's popular among a certain niche but unpalatable to mainstream businesses that are willing to pay premium dollars to reach the FOX audience, cable's largest, via its other shows.

    •  9 million listeners is not a niche following. (0+ / 0-)

Just because companies avoid a particular show doesn't necessarily translate into losses for Fox.

      •  SKY reaches an audience of 9 million (1+ / 0-)

Not even every FOX viewer watches Beck, as he runs third on his own network.

I also noted advertisers reach FOX audience

        via its other shows

, so no, it doesn't translate into losses for FOX.

A typical hour of airtime offers anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes of commercial advertising slots. Here's Fox News Channel rates from 2002 (so these will be low):

Executives at both networks estimate that Fox's 30-second commercial spots cost $3,000 to $4,000 during the day and up to $20,000 in prime time, and that CNN's cost $6,000 to $7,000 during the day and up to $30,000 in prime time.

That's $800,000 in lost prime time-revenue. That's gotta hurt real bad. Obviously they are deciding to carry that cost because he has a massive contract and they've already paid him millions. The cost of buying him out is still pretty high. As time goes along, though, the value of his contract will decrease and the lack of ad revenue will have the accountants increasingly red-flagging the Beck problem.

I tend to agree with the commenters above who note that Beck gives Fox Teabagger cred and that's a loyal, core audience.
