  •  Generally speaking -- (10+ / 0-)

the way you win a debate is by presenting a more compelling case for your particular thesis on a topic.  And you do this by showing how the preponderance of evidence (given the integrity of your values) militates toward the acceptance of your thesis.

There's really not a whole lot more to it than that.

Of course, that would assume a real debate, which happens only rarely here on Orange.  "There it is!" looks to me like various modes of cheerleading, to which the debate scorer grants a zero.

    •  Agreed. Advocacy is different in many ways (6+ / 0-)

and I think that confusion often leads us into trouble because the expectations are different, but many elements of the process are the same.

    •  And the point of it was not to score points (0+ / 0-)
but to bring awareness of actions, and the idea that we are remembered and that has impact above and beyond the moment.

It is a zero, for both parties, and as such, not something to point to and claim some greater thing.

Also, once seen for the dynamic it is, the idea that one can go through and think it over situation by situation then brings that next level of working with others in that there is the action, the next action, and the once removed consequence.

Being aware of that pit means avoiding it.  Being aware of the entrance to it, as in some of the material presented here, then is not only avoidance, but some ability to deflect, instead of react when another enters the pit.

IF THEY ARE GOING TO SCREW THE PEOPLE, MAKE THEM OWN IT.
