  •  We lived in Western Mass from 95 to '01 (5+ / 0-)

and then moved back to our home in Pittsburgh.

One of my sons, while attending 7th grade in West Springfield, was bullied daily and horribly.  It was more than words.  Teachers were contacting me, worried.  But nothing was done.  He was bullied because he was smart and motivated.

Then, we moved back to Pittsburgh.  No bullying... NONE.

I was never so glad to be back in my hometown.

      I have family there.

    •  part of the problem there I believe (3+ / 0-)

was that he was a twin

the school divided the kids into "teams"

One team was composed of the smart and motivated students.

One team was composed of what were perceived as "problem" children.

Because they were twins, the school insisted that my sons be on separate "teams" with no regard to how that might affect my sons.

The son in the "problem" team was the one who was bullied without mercy.

I live in Springfield, and had to deal with this for years, probably for the same reason (that, and I wasn't exactly following the latest trends).  For what it's worth, at least the teachers tried.  I suspect it's the administrators and the bullies' parents who don't/won't do anything.  Unfortunately, there are also parents like mine, who didn't stand up for their kids.

Thank goodness you could get away from that and start again.

year and arriving back in Pittsburgh with one month of the academic year left.

The difference was astonishing. And it turned out to be a good thing - the boys made friends before summer so they weren't the new kids at the beginning of the year.
