as "no big deal."  One mother said to me about the "no clubs" policy in our elementary school, "kids have to learn how to deal with it -- they shouldn't expect to be protected all the time."  Unsurprisingly, this woman's son was known to be a pretty sadistic kid.  At age 7!
(the no clubs policy actually was just to prevent kids from starting "clubs" that were really ways of excluding other children.  No child was given a hard time for starting a club to which everyone was invited.  My daughter did it all the time -- created a different club every week, depending on her interests of the moment, to which everyone was invited!).
But I actually agree with that mother a tiny bit -- I think we need to train our kids and help them protect themselves.  My difference with her is that I don't believe that means we just leave the kids to work it out themselves.  We need to intervene and to be very very aware of what's going on.  We also need to realize that no matter how well we train our children to deal with bullies, a lot of bullying goes beyond anything they can do for themselves.

If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.
