docu on our bombings during WWII the other night. We refused to do civilian bombings for a long time than. Brittain did those while we went after strategic sites.

Later, when the orders were given to do civilian bombings our bombers still tried to stick to military targets. Doolittle fought hard against the idea of bobing cities. In the end he lost and we began to bomb indescriminately.

The idea was to make the enemy not want to fight. Even though years of bombing by GB had proven beyond a doubt that that did not work we decided to go ahead and do it.

modern warfare.  Doesn't matter that bombing civilian targets isn't effective, we persist in believing that it is (and to prove it drop ever more bombs with each new war).  Just as we believe that torture works.

    •  Just one small point on this... (8+ / 0-)

It's true that the USAAF's tactical doctrine vs. Germany was for precision bombing whenever possible, and that the British concept of area bombing was mostly resisted within the USAAF's command structure.

However, area bombing was the accepted USAAF tactic against Japan from the get-go, including Doolittle's own famous raid on Tokyo in 1942. It's generally understood that there was an element of racism involved in this.

with any bombs. So one person told me he dropped his last bomb on a farm house.

So much for the "rules of war."
