This was a statement from my representative, Yvette Clark, and Anthony Weiner (you may be familiar with him as possibly the most outspoken member of Congress in favor of a single-payer plan), at a town hall meeting I attended within the last month.

I am reasonably sure that both of these exceptionally progressive representatives consider it not just good policy, but good politics, to deliver a health care reform bill, but they (and Weiner especially, who's been in the House much longer) are skeptical of the fix-it-later strategy, based on experience. He's found that it's easier to promise in the present than to deliver in the future.

    •  It will be FAR FAR FAR easier to get to single (0+ / 0-)

payer based on signing this bill into law than attempting it at square one.  That decision was made by the Obama camp 4 years ago.  He ran on it and he will yet achieve what he ran on.  But without this bill and all the insurance company controls in it the Public Option will not survive and single payer will die.  The PO does not have to be in the initial legislation.  It is the easy part because more than 60% of the people support it.  The lobby sucking Senate can tell their lobby paymasters that they kept the PO out of the HCR bill and they did.  But they will not be able to do it if the PO is a stand alone bill all on its on.
