      ...I have often wondered why Democrats haven't hammered home this important distinction: These people are anarchists (and that's what I would call them) who don't believe in our most fundamental institutions. The distinction between the two parties is that Democrats honor the social compact, and believe that we have some obligation to one another, and that we can achieve more together than we can otherwise. They believe it is every man or woman for themselves and that free enterprise if left completely unrestrained will somehow meet human needs.

      Bush tried that in the Katrina aftermath, refusing to provide governmental assistance and trusting that free enterprise and church groups would address the problem. And so Orleanians got a few sandwiches from Baptists....and Sean Penn had to commandeer a canoe to rescue people.

      That was anarchy, because the people in government did not believe in using the levers of government to assist Americans.

      If you hate government, don't run for office.
