affirm our belief in the Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, the rule of law

when actions by your government (and mine) are in direct contradiction to the words?  How many times did we hear Bush and the Repubs yap about the sacredness of "Rule of Law!  Rule of Law!" while they had people behind the scenes (like Yoo and Bybee) writing opinions (which, by the way, when coming from the OPR carry the weight of law) which set precedent that flew in the face of their words?

People were tortured horribly due to the opinions these guys handed out that had the weight of law.  People died as a result of that torture.  How you can possibly blow this off as

Life is short.  Let's live the future in the future.  Leave the past to the historians

leaves me just about speechless.  As Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted Scooter Libby said:

Either the law matters--or it doesn't.  And in that case we have chaos.

Trying to talk sense to crazy people never works.
