    Mostly what we learn from history, sadly, is that people do not learn from history.

    After all, the decision to "let bygones be bygones" in 1876 ended Reconstruction, and allowed the people who tortured slaves to continue torturing them after they were "freed".  And their descendants for nearly a century after that.

    Sometimes, you can't make a deal with the bad guys.  Sometimes, you just have to hold them accountable.

    Again:  mostly what we learn from history is that people do not learn from history.
