  •  !? majority of fertilizations spontaneously abort (4.00)
wow--this is an absurd and unenforceable law.  the majority (well, by a whisker--50-51%) of fertilizations are spontaneously aborted by the woman's body within a few days.

by this law, essentially any sexually active woman is likely guilty of a crime.

seems to me that this is a major problem with the position that life begins at fertilization--it puts any sexually active woman in the legal position of being guilty of murder/manslaughter/some nasty crime.  their best out looks to be that spontaneous abortions don't count because they're "acts of god"--but that seems a bit weak, as any woman who knows this fact could be looked at as contemplating murder/manslaughter/inadvertant death any time she has sex (let alone what it means for women trying to get pregnant).

    •  Next is jail for drinking coffee (4.00)
they say LOTS of coffee can cause a miscarriage, so if you have one, and they prove you have caffiene in your blood, voluntary manslaughter for you!

I used to make dark jokes of things like this, but here comes the Handmaid's Tale.

      •  No kidding (4.00)
As it happens, I finished reading The Handmaid's Tale a few nights ago.  I highly recommend it to those who haven't read it.  One of the most striking things about the novel is how the protagonist attempts to reconstruct how she lost all of her rights when life went on as "usual".

        I can't think of a good sig.

This is the Handmaid's Tale.  Women are to become incubators.  Anything that interferes (or potentially interferes) with the complete incubation and delivery of a baby will become criminal.

Read it or see the movie and shiver...

          •  sooo basically... (none)
Since in the coming Republic of Gilead, divorce will probably be outlawed (except for those privileged few at the top), infertile wives will be beheaded to make room for their fertile replacements.

(sorry.  I was watching Simon Schama's History of Britain last night.)
