incorporate politically popular provisions as well, otherwise they'd have a harder time passing this.

And I think that goes without saying Slink. Passing a bill that the American People see as being a real help to them, will net tons and tons of votes, will create excitement in the base, and will begin to put an end to the cynical and desructive meme that "Government is the Problem!" by demonstrating that good governance actually does yield solutions. It's only bad government (as brought to you by the GOP) that is the problem!

I strongly believe that if Democrats can pass some solid and popular legislation over the course of the next several months, and the Republicans remain on the sidelines (with arms crossed and scowls on their faces), 2010 could actually become a year of Democratic gains, and 2012 (if we follow that script) could be a Landslide Election year, with Obama getting 400+ E.V.s, taking some Southern States (Georgia, S.Car), moving into areas like the Northern Plains, solidifying the Sothwest, and Hell, even take back Texas, after all these years!  And with majorities in Congress big enough for even Democrats to get things done!

On the other hand, modest legislation would yield more modest results.
It's called Common Sense! And it's not a bad idea to put it into practice.
