    that laying off people and cutting the remaining employees benefits is 'cost cutting.'  

    I'm not sure it gets through to them that a financial stable middle class is good for the country and good for business.

    They don't really care because there are new markets opening in Asia and elsewhere to buy their goods.  They make money, so why worry about the American middle class?

    Even the businesses that aren't making great sales in the US don't get it.  If sales are down, just lay off Americans, hire cheaper people to work overseas, no problem.

    And even if that doesn't work and the firm goes belly up, they've got their huge bonuses and feel no pain, unlike their former employees who are out of work or underemployed in jobs that pay half of what they make.
