    do many of those fine institutions get cited and have near as much influence as the rabid right's major league stink tanks (AEI, Heritage, Cato, just to name a few).  

    On the other hand don't forget Center for American Progress, who appear to be the big new playa for the good guys.

      I think those institutes are respected and have influence.  However, the right wing institutes have more influence because the right is in power.  If the Democrats were in power, you'd see the reverse.

        Even during the Clinton years, you were always more likely to see someone from AEI quoted than Brookings.  And while Brookings is often labelled as "liberal," it's really quite mainstream.  By contrast, AEI, which (along with Heritage) is the granddaddy of conservative thinktanks, is often not labelled at all.  Moreover, NONE of the left-of-center tanks can match the funding on the right.  We needed a Soros 15 years ago.
