  •  Obama's idea of school reform... (6+ / 0-)

and granted it didn't start with him, is to fire all the teachers. This is bullshit. Why doesn't he apply that to needed reform on Wall Street, and demand that the CEOs step down? Instead he rewards them with bailouts. Go figure.

Mass firings of teachers is an assault on our union system. Management doesn't want to negotiate. They want control. The end result, if you look at New Orleans, ain't pretty: lack of transparency in the charter system, no teacher job power, falling wages, and lack of commitment to the community by teachers; a revolving door.

Supt. Frances Gallo had just recommended that the district's Board of Trustees fire the entire teaching staff of the city's only high school, effective at the end of the school year.

Then, as the board's vice chairwoman, Sonia Rodrigues, read each name aloud, a teacher stood. Some stood in silence, others held back tears.

"Look up, Gallo! Look at us!"

Gallo was sitting on the stage with the seven trustees and a small group of administrators. She rose and looked out at the audience in the packed high school auditorium. She remained standing until the last of 93 names - a history teacher, a reading specialist, physical education, music and art teachers, a social worker, a nurse, the school psychologist, even the principal - was called.

"Revolutionary Road" was a brilliant film.

    •  I know Duncan has supported this (3+ / 0-)

from someone in RI who participates in a private discussion group, the situation is somewhat complicated, with both the superintendent and the teachers digging in their heels.

The super asked for extra work.  The evidence is not clear on if or how much extra pay was going to be offered for the extra work.

I will only note this -  if you entirely replace the teaching staff you are likely to see LOWER test scores the first year.  Continuity and a school culture are very important parts of a learning environment.

Of course, do not be surprised if TFA jumps on this and offers to provide a complete teaching staff for next year, in the hopes they can use this as a signature moment.  And the lower salaries of TFA people would save the school system a chunk of change.

do we still have a Republic and a Constitution if our elected officials will not stand up for them on our behalf?

    •  data irony - WHERE is the data on BOSSES? (3+ / 0-)

WHERE is the data on how many initiatives or proposals or whatever EACH boss proposed?

WHERE is the data on how much it costs in time to implement the intiatives?

WHERE is the data on what useful things became more useful?

funny how data driven decision making is only used to blame teachers ...?????

    •  excellent commondreams link (0+ / 0-)

That article had mega comments.  Surprising and encouraging.

This mass firing cannot be allowed to stand.
