  •  I've got to read this! (3+ / 0-)

As I was reading the review, all I could think was, "This woman is advocating the EXACT OPPOSITE of everything in Cleveland Superintendent Eugene Sanders' recently release "Whatever It Takes" plan. That plan mostly focused on shutting schools and streamlining the administrative offices, along with demanding all schools achieve an unrealistic ranking within three years or face dire punishment There's nothing in it about actual education. In a post-plan interview my paper did with one of Sanders' top underlings (I think he's in charge of curriculum; I'd have to look it up), he blamed teachers 100% for faulure to learn saying, "It's not a problem with the kids; it's an adult [i.e. teacher] problem." Meanwhile, the school we featured in the cover story that was a sidebar to has massive rates of poverty, foreclosure and vacancies, causing major transiency in the school. So kids aren't in any shape to learn when they come to school — but this guy thinks that shouldn't matter and the teachers should just be able to fix it all. I was so furious when I read that.
