  •  We may need a "dole" (10+ / 0-)

instead of continually extending unemployment insurance.  Since many people never qualify for UI benefits anyways and since it appears that the unemployment we are currently experiencing may in fact be structural, a dole would be a far better way to address the problem going forward than any combination of UI extensions/tax credits/temporary stimulus.

Right now, I can't even volunteer to do anything because I don't have a car and transportation isn't available for free. (Not that I expect it to be; I just mean that even volunteering can cost you money.)

It's a sad waste to our society that people as experienced and educated as I am are simply sitting and letting our skills atrophy instead of being put to a useful purpose.

Without some kind of monetary help, people just can't live in this country. Food stamps -- the only thing many of us qualify for -- isn't enough. It doesn't pay rent or bills. If there isn't some type of assistance more readily available, people are going to turn to theft and violence to get what they need.

People are going to turn to politicians to deliver the basics.  If the Dems don't deliver, the Republicans will -- and what they deliver won't be pretty.
