    The UFT operates several of them themselves. Most are operated by non-profits. They are still 'Public' schools,

    Beyond their direct effects on the students they teach, they have helped to infuse the rest of the school system with a new spirit of entrepreneurship. Principals and teachers are taking the lead in reorganizing existing schools. Multiple schools operate within the same building, focusing on children of different agea or different needs.

    It is no panacea, but it is major improvement over how things operated twenty years ago. I'm not sure that I endorse the concept of firing half the staff. But I will say that if an auto plant was producing cars that failed 40% of the time, it would probably be time for someone to get fired.
