    And disagree with the idea that all independents are gutless.

    I registered at 20 as a Democrat, as it was the family tradition. And I always despised the "moral majority" bigots who had taken over the Republican Party in the '80s.

    As a very young child, my heroes were the enlightenment figures and '60s civil rights leaders, so choosing the Democratic Party was the natural course of action.

    But sometime in the 1990s, Clinton fatigue set in. Perhaps it was the "Era of Big Government is over" sentiment of the 1996 SOTU, or the endless pandering to micro-polls and exurbanites (School uniforms, anyone?)

    At some point, however, I wanted more of a voice in primaries and recognized that, at least for now, we have a two party system.

    And, honestly, I had never voted Republican at any time in my life. And I will never pull the lever for the theocratic greed ticket. So I got back on the bus.
