  •  I've driven (6+ / 0-)

from Wall to Wounded Knee in January. I see no reason to justify coming home to such country. It is achingly beautiful out there. The colors, the shadows, the empty sky, the wind all combine to open the heart. I've traveled through the Wind River Rez in winter as well. Even in the desolation of the unfulfilled promises, the poverty, the ruinous homesteads, the downfallen trailers surrounded with rusting junk, the land talks. The steely shadows of clouds race across the roads and corrals and moldering haystacks. Smoke rises from a tipi. A pregnant dog lopes alongside the highway. Horses stand in the small sunlight. It is all waiting, Indian Country. It waits. The Nations aren't refugees in their own lands. Their lands are their refuge.
