  •  Actually it's their buying power, (11+ / 0-)

not that they write the textbooks.  They make "suggestions" to the publishers - suggestions as in: we won't buy your books if you don't (fill in the blank).  The publishers are culpable here as well.  The power is on the way out, however, with the advent of online texts.  Or so I've heard.

I am going to start a textbook publishing firm that is a not-for-profit enterprise.  I will sell the books at cost, thus upsetting Texas' place in the school eco-systems.

My husband's college has already started just letting the professors decide what books rather than setting a broad standard.  I'd like it so that individual teachers could have that option as well in K-12, or at least school systems.  Not all textbooks are created equal!

wealth of people from the far right who will choose The Holy Bible as a Sociology, Biology, History, and Sciences textbook.  Remember that 30% of Texans believe the earth is 6000 years old, and that The Flintstones was a documentary.

PS I'm a Texan and reserve the right to criticize the wingers in my state - but I also work hard for the Democrats here, and I love my liberal friends and neighbors.
