  •  Radical? Yes. Useful? not so much. (13+ / 0-)

The 93 people terminated were people who wanted more pay for working longer days and doing work outside their job description. I am sure some were bad teachers or people who were not suited for working with immigrant students with low skills and no support from family members. But that is not an excuse to fire everyone and effectively close the school.

It would be interesting to know what the school committee plans are to handle the students, now that the school is closed. Not much is said about that.

This was nothing but a union busting attempt which may have succeeded for now.

everyone or lengthen hours in order to get more federal funds.

The teachers didn't want to lengthen hours, even if they were paid for it.

The issue is that the teacher's wanted to be paid for all of the extra hours that they worked and wanted to be paid at a higher rate than what the superintendent offered:

But Gallo said she could pay teachers for only some of the extra duties. Union leaders said they wanted teachers to be paid for more of the additional work and at a higher pay rate — $90 per hour rather than the $30 per hour offered by Gallo.

      •  Who sets federal law? (4+ / 0-)

When Democrats control the White House and Congress, we should have a federal law that involves a close examination of the school and improved management. Current policies are not helpful, and Obama and Duncan are not making them any better.
