this isn't union bashing - son of union pipefitter and union teacher here - but both my parents would complain up a storm about their union brothers and sisters that really should have been tossed out on their ass but weren't.

I wholeheartedly agree that there's a doublestandard - when I hear a Wall Street firm talk about bonuses and say they "need to pay them to keep good people", I always would like someone to ask how putting a trained goat in the executive chair could have turned out worse.

But - it's a catch-22... the union's job is to protect it's members... ALL of them, good and bad.

So how do you deal with "bad" members?

Saw it in my own school career, saw it working for several years as a laborer out of the plumbers and pipefitters local.

I wish unions would be more proactive in ensuring they have good members - perhaps there are programs we don't hear about, but I never saw them... I just saw bad fitters (we're talking guys that show up on jobs an hour late, take a 2 hour lunch, then show up later in the afternoon drunk) keeping jobs because they were journeymen that had gotten their cards long ago.

I guess everyone's got their own blog now.

to protect all its members. It's the union's LEGAL OBLIGATION. It's called the Duty of Fair Representation. If the union does not ensure that all its members get the same due process in disciplinary or evaluation situations, the union can be, and will be, subject to its own Unfair Labor Practice complaints, or could be found liable in a member's lawsuit.

This is why people accuse unions of defending "incompetents." Even incompetent employees have the same rights as anyone else.
