  •  If TX is like NM (7+ / 0-)

I have worked in some poverty area schools in NM.  The teachers cannor overcome the problems of parents whose cultures are total alien to the American education system.  You have to understand the circumstances some of these kids grow up in, and if you are in the schools in TX you know what I am talking about.  Like parents going to the casino instead of picking up their kids and the kids having to call the grandparents, and the teathers having to wait with the kids under the grandmother gets there...  Or a kid walking in in the middle of March not speaking a word of English and suddenly she is in a 10th grade class and asked to do algebra and the school has to get some results for that child, and there is nobody around to teach algebra who speaks Spanish...

and you're just barely scratching the surface.

Some additional things that Im aware of... first of all, many of these parents are quite young themselves, and products of a screwy school system of the past 30 years. In TX with hispanic, specifically Mexican kids, there are some cultural factors in the mix as well. Theres a cultural expectation for boys to quit school by 9th or 10th grade and go to work (day labor or whathaveyou, under the radar) and contribute to the family income. A boy teenager who tries to resist that is up against a lot. Then theres the gangs.
