    my mother and my mother-in-law both taught for many years under the auspices of some powerful Teachers' unions in the Northeast.  I largely agree with you and respect the Teachers' unions, but a riduculous stance is not allowing a bad teacher to be let go or reassigned.  Taking all that you said into consideration (I mentioned those same points in a post earlier), some teachers are legitimately bad - get rid of them - they taint the profession.  I agree that teachers should make more.  As for parents, I couldn't agree with you more.  That is a significant part of the problem in inner city and poverty-stricken schools.  My mother moved from teaching to counseling and the stuff she used to tell me about what children were dealing with at home would make your hair stand on end - there is no way kids can be productive coming from some of these homes.  But I still contend that schools have to be structured to deliver the social services these kids need or there will never be any success.  Isolate the ones that absolutely can't be helped and let the rest get an education.
