  •  Show me the 217 votes needed for the house bill (5+ / 0-)

We don't have that anymore.  Wexler's gone, Cao's not voting for it, Murtha passed away, etc.

We couldn't pass the house bill again in the house today. That's how tough this is.

But if you want a name, how about Bart Gordon, who didn't vote for the bill before but is willing to vote for it now.

    •  If we can't pass the bill in the House, (3+ / 0-)

we're fucked anyway. Why not fight for something popular if we're going down?

the powers that be that if we pass a bill that the Republicans pretend to hate and many Democrats and Independents really do not like, then it would be better than going down fighting for something that a majority of people - a mjority including Democrats, Independents and Republicans - like, they would be better off at the polls in the Fall.

Compromise is taking on a whole new meaning in this era.  Used to be that most everyone got something that made them reasonably "happy", but these days, it seems, the objective is to make everyone unhappy - and for those that aren't really unhappy it is an added bonus that certain things get thrown in that the pretenders can complain about and find an audience to rally on the basis of unhappiness.

Its all good.  This is 65th dimensional chess.  Just sit tight.  We will manage to take a pawn at some point.  Really.  We will.

pelosi has lost wexler, murtha and one other.  so it's 217 counting on Gao, who is likely out.  then add to the mix the people whose knickers are atwist because they prefer stupak to nelson vs the opposite, then the venn diagram of the nelson over stupak contingent and public option alignment.  forget herding; pelosi is juggling cats at this point.

People are upset Obama hasn't solved all the problems yet. C'mon, he's only been in office one year...the man went to Harvard, not Hogwarts. - Wanda Sykes
