It was long assumed, not just by bigots and idiots, that gay men had more partners per year than hetero men did.

Well.  It turns out that this stereotype was based on a SINGLE study of gay men, and that that sample was drawn from a gay bar.  The original study was full of limitations (which were stated) but the limitations got lost in the citing, and so ... there's a stereotype.

I would guess that people who attend mardi gras in New Orleans are more likely to be sexually aggressive than other people, or even than themselves at other times of year, in other places.

We all differ in ways that matter. But we're all the same in the ways that matter most.

men are so much more into cross-dressing than women.

When I first came out, there was one hole-in-the-wall bar for lesbians and two or three very nice clubs for men.

The women's bar would sometimes hold King and Queen shows. The women were encouraged to participate, but ultimately the guys outnumbered the gals about 100 to one. In a girls bar.

Of course the men's clubs held more and better drag shows, but I'm just sayin' the girls didn't do drag even in their own bar.

I always wondered why that was.

already are "allowed" by this culture to wear men's clothing and men are not "allowed" to wear women's clothes? And, let's face it, men's clothes are not really that extravagant. On any given red carpet, the women are the ones given the pass/fail treatment by the gossip rags, while the men don't really vary the tuxes and suits that much. Now, if I were going to do man drag, I would choose something historical, like a highwayman or the Man in the Iron Mask. I would also want the body to match, however. An obese woman as imprisoned French royalty doesn't make for a very good show.

that pickup bars, bathhouses, airport toilets, etc. play pretty much the same role in gay male life that singles bars, strip joints, frat parties, etc. play in straight male life. You don't get random samples of anything in places like that.

Similarly, the longstanding assumption that older gay men led lonely lives was based on their failure to show up on the singles scene. Of course that happens to straight people too as they get older, but everyone knows that's because they settle down. Occam's Razor would say the same thing applies to gay men, but exotic explanations have more publicity value than mundane ones.

Facts are sweet, but some people are factose intolerant
