that DIY home repairs which serve to maintain the life of a structure indefinitely are considered to be part of the underground or shadow economy.  In other words, since we now have a surplus of over five million residences that are vacant and who knows how many that are underutilized, homebuilders have to count on the dispersal of the population along new roads and highways to continue.  Public transit and compact communal living aren't just a threat to the automobile industry.  Communal living is encouraged for the elderly because they don't go anywhere by themselves, anyway.

It isn't just cops and highway engineers that have an interest in "keepin' 'em movin'"

Our whole culture aims to keep people on a treadmill or the gerbil's wheel--moving without getting anywhere.
