as to what constitutes a lead role, and what constitutes a supporting role?

    •  There aren't any. (5+ / 0-)

So we get clearly lead roles like Tatum O'Neal in Paper Moon getting a supporting nod, and Peter Finch, who is not the lead in Network (less time on screen than William Holden or Robert Duvall) winning Best Actor outright.

        (1) Geoffrey Rush getting a Best Actor nomination for Shine and winning, while Noah Taylor, the young David Helfgott in the movie, got totally shut out.
        (2) Admittedly, I haven't seen this one (again, the weak stomach thing), but I heard that Anthony Hopkins was only on screen in The Silence of the Lambs for something like 20 minutes, but got a Best Actor nomination, and of course he won.

        •  That's exactly right, on both counts. (1+ / 0-)

I forgot about Hopkins in particular: that's a perfect example.

....Supporting Actor categories, no problem, even though both characters are key in the stories, which is why they got nominated for Best Actor, I suppose.
