Given that the state legislature is likely to sign off today on a travesty they call a state budget, which will probably cut health care for over 300,000 people,  including 47,000 kids, which could wipe out more than 42,000 health care related jobs, and cause us to lose more than $2.8 billion in federal matching funds and stimulus money, would you mind commenting on this? How can we save this state from the idiocy and negligence in the legislature?

Furthermore, I saw that  McCain and Kyl have issued a statement opposing the proposed May 18th ballot initiative to increase our sales tax to raise income for this failing state.  Would you mind commenting on that issue as well?

    Thanks, from a local supporter.

    •  and why only sales tax, (4+ / 0-)

I would not mind a bit having my real estate tax go up some.  I have lived here for 7 years and they have barely fluctuated.  Why oh why do they have to destroy so many people just so they "don't raise taxes".

Aside from that, sales tax hits everyone, (let's get that little guy!) whereas R.E. tax increase would hit the rich harder.

What if the hokeypokey is what it's all about?

We have no state income tax, so we rely on a strange mix of sales and other taxes.

As a result, when we  hit times like this, we end up with difficult finding ways to make up the amount we're missing.

We're constitutionally prevented from having a deficit, so that's not even a possibility.

Someone has proposed that we have a 4% income tax on incomes over 200k, and then reduce our state sales tax by 1%.  The problem is that in a state like AZ, you have to contend with the snowbirds and others who go to AZ because it has lower taxes.

My in laws choose to put most of their things at their AZ address, because they can avoid some of the taxes that we have here.

because in the same budget proposal the state is going to stop funding all juvenal delinquincy programs, transferring those programs to the counties without any funding. The counties will have to raise property taxes.
