    Salt Lake City was established by the original Mormons who were ferociously community/self-sufficient.  

    The outlying towns may have started later as suburbs, with all the usual nonsense about "property values" eclipsing human values.  

    Chickens in the yard are going to prove an interesting issue when avian flu goes human-to-human.

      That reminds me, though. My father's mother lived in a house in Anadarko, OK which was built in the 20s and which was a part of a scheme which used the production of chickens and eggs to help pay off the houses. When I was a toddler in the early 50s they still had a few chickens in the coop.
