  •  Plus, marriage. (15+ / 0-)

A critic may argue that of course you can get there, if you simply settle for having a job within 30 miles of mom, instead of deciding that you have to be an anthropologist or whatnot.  After all, mom made similar career sacrifices to take care of us when we couldn't take care of ourselves; why shouldn't we reciprocate?
But then, if you're married and raising kids, you may very well have families in two places a thousand miles apart.  My parents and my wife's parents are on the other side of an ocean.  No matter how we do it, we won't be able to check in on everyone.

    •  We were lucky -- my brother & I (15+ / 0-)

both live in the city our Dad lived in and my brother was an incredibly devoted son -- had lunch with my father every day.   But jobs and marriage worked out well for us that way -- it could have gone the opposite direction.
Now that my father is gone, my brother spends his excess energy helping out my husband's parents!  If there were more people like my brother around, no one would die the way Ms. Goggins did.

If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.

Lived and worked in Florida, which is approximately about 500 miles away from SC. And he did check in, but since he had to work, he genuinely did not understand the depth of his mother's sickness ( she started to withdraw from people about 15 years ago) and perhaps due to fact that Ms. Goggins was indeed a strong capable person in her youth, Mr. Goggins probably thought his mother was truly okay.

We all must look after seniors and be proactive in helping them- even if they resist.

      Why yes, I am Catholic.
