    That would be the case if you were talking about mean wealth; the mean is so affected by skewness, and the distribution of wealth in the US is so skewed, that group differences in mean wealth would reflect nothing but the demographics of at most the 5000 richest families in the US. But the median isn't affected by outliers; it's the figure where half are below and half are above.

    My first impression was that the difference must be due to differences in the rate of homeownership; for women in that age range, home equity accounts for the majority of their assets.
