Which explains why they oppose him.

    Google "Governor Moonbeam".

    •  He's going to have to work at erasing that image. (1+ / 0-)

Shouldn't be too hard, considering he's had some important elective jobs since then.

I'm not a huge Brown fan either, but voters over 60 here in California oppose Brown because they tend to vote Republican in general - McCain actually "won" with that demographic in California.

Which is why I support him.
And he'd have to work less at overcoming that name if liberals would stop bringing it up as much as conservatives.

      •  he's not the same Jerry Brown (1+ / 0-)

Brown has spent the last couple decades shifting to the right. He got elected Attorney General (his current office in California) on a tough on crime, lock 'em up platform, which was backed up by his 8 years as mayor of Oakland, where he ramped up the drug war even further, sending even more young people of color to prison.
Perhaps someone with a platform and politics like 70s-era Jerry Brown could do some good today, but that's not this guy.

    •  Yaaahhh!!! Medflies!!! (0+ / 0-)

It took me a long time to get over hearing helicopters flying over spraying insecticide.

perhaps unintended.  The fact is that Brown tried to solve the medfly problem without using pesticides.  He ordered irradiated males to be dropped, which was a proven and effective alternative.  Unfortunately, the batches which were sold to the state were not irradiated correctly, and fertile male medflies ended up being dropped.  Right idea, bad execution.

    •  Brown As Gov Was Well-Regarded... (3+ / 0-)

The older set that I know in California thinks he was a good governor.   He should win this comfortably, especially once people get to know Whitman better and her negatives go up.   Didn't she just close out the press corps yesterday, to an event where she had just invited them?

    •  And the Moonbeam Thing-- Brown Wanted a VTC Room (3+ / 0-)

And on that "Moonbeam" nickname-- Brown was called that by Mike Royko or some similar unfunny Dave Barry type, because Brown proposed (in like '77 or so) that Sacramento be video-linked via satellite with San Diego and other far away places for meetings, etc, to save on travel time and expenses.

It was cutting edge, intelligent thinking-- so of course the talking head dunces will make fun of it... that's why they're dunces.   Basically, he was calling for a Video Teleconference Room (VTC), a cutting-edge thirty years in advance.
