Part of it's the South.  Part is the Southwest.  Part is the plains.

ask any native texan. "we" don't consider any part of our state as "the south".

culturally, even the part of the state that would be "the south" using your geography (and it's where i was born and raised and now live again) has little to nothing in common culturally with "the south" (we don't sip mint juleps on the front porches of our antebellum plantations because...well, we don't have 'em here).

but some people here have "southern" accents and might as well be in the border south.

"Obama is teh suck" does not make good political commentary.

I have lived in Texas all of my life and used to feel the same - that it isn't the South. But I am starting to feel differently. It is seeming like this idea obfuscates the true alignment of Texas with the goals, ideals, methods of the South. Witness the continuing strong identification with Confederacy imagery in Texas and the history of being one of the last states to fully integrated public schools. Witness the continuing influence of the conservative Christian movements. It is seeming like it is more the idea of Texas being 'independent', the 'Lone Star State' than a reality.

I know that sounds funny, but maybe East Texas gets thrown in with the South because, well, it's in the south and people speak with Southern accents (which I think is ultimately how people define "the South", if not "the old Confederacy plus Kentucky").  The hillbilly South is pretty short on plantations, too, remember.  And I keep thinking of the apparent historical connections between Texas and Tennessee (just think of Sam Houston and Davy Crockett).

But if East Texas isn't part of the South or the West, what other region could you throw it in with?  Maybe East Texas and Oklahoma make their own region.

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!

      •  Sorry, Texas decided it in 1861. (2+ / 0-)

Sam Houston would have no part of it, but Texas sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War, so South it is.  It gets extra credit for not emancipating the slaves until June 19, 1865.

Hey, if Texas can be diverse, and it is, certainly the South can be diverse.
