    And I agree, if one defines the South by it's role in the Civil War and the support of slavery and segregation, Texas clearly is part of that. Similarly, it definitely is part of the Bible Belt.

    OTOH, my view of Texas probably is shaped by the fact that I grew up in South Central Texas, where the ethnic makeup is markedly different than in "the South," and than in most other parts of the state. San Antonio and Amarillo, for example, have little to nothing in common.

    I also agree with you about the Texas exceptionalism attitude. I still find it odd, all these many years after I left the state.
