what can adequately be explained by stupidity.

I may be wrong, but I don't see necessarily see a malicious attempt to get someone drummed out of the military here.

It's standard practice (at least here in Rapid City) to alert the military when a service member or a dependent(s) is arrested.  The two departments work closely together and have overlapping jurisdiction in a lot of cases.  Had Newsome's spouse been male the Air Force would have been notified. Had Newsome's child been arrested the Air Force would have been notified. The cops treated Newsome's wife just like any other spouse of a military member.  The fact that the Air Force used that information to end Newsone's career is tragic and wrong.  But not the fault of the officers who reported the arrest.

    •  No one was arrested though. The cops were peeping (10+ / 0-)

through the window and had to carefully maneuver themselves so they could even read a marriage certificate that was laying inside on the kitchen table (maybe they even had to pull out binoculars in order to read it).

And then they reported what they had surreptitiously read during their voyeuristic Peeping Tom escapade.

A marriage certificate inside the privacy of someone's home on the kitchen table is not a public display. Nor is it illegal contraband.

to send a report to the air force.  They frequently help apprehend "wanted" military dependents.  First thing you do when you are trying to locate a dependent is to contact the members first shirt for any help s/he can give you.

And it must have worked Rapid City Journal

Newsome's partner is out on bail on one felony and three misdemeanor counts of theft stemming from an incident last year, court officials in Fairbanks, Alaska, said.

Again, I'm  sorry that Newsome fell afoul of dadt, but it sounds, (given a very limited amount of info.) like her spouse was handled like any spouse would have been.

        •  The cops got pissed because Newsome was at work (6+ / 0-)

and would not leave her job at the military base to come home to help the cops find her partner.

The cops said Newsome was not cooperative when they showed up at her home... wait for it... because she was at work on the military base.

Is that acceptable behavior on the part of cops? To force people to leave work and drive all the way to their home just so they can talk to the cops?

The Rapid City Police Department says Newsome, an aircraft armament system craftsman who spent nine years in the Air Force, was not cooperative when they showed up at her home in November with an arrest warrant for her partner, who was wanted on theft charges in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Newsome was at work at the base at the time and refused to immediately come home and assist the officers in finding her partner, whom she married in Iowa — where gay marriage is legal — in October.

Police officers, who said they spotted the marriage license on the kitchen table through a window of Newsome's home, alerted the base, police Chief Steve Allender said in a statement sent to the AP. The license was relevant to the investigation because it showed both the relationship and residency of the two women, he said.

Furthermore, you did not finish the entire paragraph on that negative story about felonies and warrants...

Newsome's partner is currently out on bail on one felony and three misdemeanor counts of theft stemming from an incident last year, court officials in Fairbanks said. More information was not immediately available, and Newsome said she didn't know the status of the case and didn't provide more details about it.

Do you know that if you rent a couple of movies from an automated kiosk... you have to give them your bank info in order to make it so easy for you to just pop in and out to get those movies... and then if there should be some error or mistake where the return is NOT noted... the small-time "businessman" who runs that racket can legally suck $300-500 for two movies that cost $10 at Wal-Mart... he can suck it out of your bank account. And if you are lucky, you have proof or someone to vouch that you did indeed return the movies... but the small-time racketeer dude will take his good old time in refunding your $500 to your bank account. 4-6 weeks.  And for poor young people... that means other checks and payments bounce when they didn't expect it. And, of course, the bank racketeers start sucking their fees out on top of all this.

I know all this for a fact because this story happened to someone I helped. I had to make the phone calls to the crook businessman who ran this racket and stole money from college kids. I had to drop names of officials and pull some weight to move the bastard to return the money.

These little things happen all over this nation every single second of every single day.

Felony theft levels... $150 in Illinois.  $300 in Florida. $500 in Alaska.

And you have the audacity to infer and jump to the conclusion that the woman is a terrible horrible evil criminal who deserves to have every thing the court system can throw at her.

        •  Nope, this crime had nothing to do with dadt... (6+ / 0-)

until the police made it that.
I don't know why you are supporting the snooping police on an issue that has nothing to do with her partner's crime in another state.

    •  A dubious claim (8+ / 0-)

Had Newsome's spouse been male the Air Force would have been notified

I'd have to see some proof.

Also interesting to note this is likely the only circumstances these cops would recognize this as a valid marriage, lol. If she's showed for a family recognizance release, I'd bet good money they wouldn't release her wife to her and claim the marriage was not valid in that state.

@AlmightyGod Blasphemy is a victimless crime.

as someone who lives in Rapid City with a same sex partner, I've found a lot less hostility here then you seem to assume.

All I KNOW is that in a former life I used to make semi-regular phone calls to "the first shirt" to get him/her to talk to a service member about really minor fines, failure to appear type issues.  It was much more effective than tracking the individual them self down.

    •  No, police didn't just alert military... (4+ / 0-)

      about a partner's potential crime. That's a separate issue.
No, they went beyond that to report a marriage certificate through peeping. That is wrong.

    •  If that is true, the entire policy is malicious (3+ / 0-)

and should be done away with.
