  •  I'm curious what's the aim of this movement? (9+ / 0-)

Do they expect the Census Bureau to honestly tally these stickers, or other write-ins and report the info? I seriously doubt they will.

I think it's worthwhile, however. Witness the controversial inclusion of "negro" this year. Census officials said the return of the word was a response to people writing it in, because older African Americans did not identify with "black" or "African American." So, there's precedent that write-ins can affect their choices.

Hopefully it will spur the Census to include us officially in 2010.

That said, I see a possible backfire. LGBT Americans are reluctant to "out" themselves, even anonymously, on a gov't document, and there's good reason to believe much of the country may feel that way.

Then the effect is to seriously underreport our numbers. Moreover, in places like NYC & SF & LA, there will surely be less of that, where LGBT Americans have local discrimination protection and generally live their lives "out."

But the data the Census returns could be used by the right to further marginalize our community as tiny and vocal and concentrated only on those awful elite coastal areas.

@AlmightyGod Blasphemy is a victimless crime.
