  •  I've always wondered if the US has some epidemic (0+ / 0-)

of 'bad parents' relative to the nations far ahead of it in academic achievement. Seems unlikely, but I'd like to see some documentation before blaming them rather than the structural differences between educational systems.

    •  Epidemic is poor, jobless, uneducated parents. (1+ / 0-)

Gets back to the diary's point that it wasn't that teachers suddenly went bad, it was that society changed from one that put high stock in public education to one that attacked it (GOP theme to push Christianity in schools and government) and one that took it for granted.

Failing kids = failing parents.  Parents may have their reasons, no jobs, etc. but that's where the fix has to be.

      •  The percentage of poor people (1+ / 0-)

in the 2000's is less than there were in the 50's. It's far too glib to simply say 'it's the GOP's fault', as it is to say 'it's the parent's fault' or 'it's the teacher's fault'. You're getting much closer when you talk about society's 'stock in public education'. Personally, I still think we liberals are far too unwilling to look at the hard lessons the Taiwanese or the Germans or Norwegians are showing us. It costs, kids need to go to school more not less, and you can't leave the curriculum in the hands of school boards around the country.

        •  Unemployment is 20%. Home loss 50%. (1+ / 0-)

You are playing games with government formulas which are determined politically to restrict social services based on available tax dollars.

          •  Then you're saying that the educational problem (0+ / 0-)

is recent? Where have you been? First you say it's because of poverty that the 80's, 90, and 2000's have shown decline. When pointed out that there is no correlation between poverty level and educational results (national level) you claim it's because of the last 3 years?

            •  As recent as 1980. Reaganomics redistributed $ (0+ / 0-)

upward, killed US economy with Wall Street greenmail attack on US industrial base, tax shift to payroll tax from income tax, anti-union government policy, public school definancing.

As parents were impoverished and families stressed schools were simultaneously defunded, teachers attacked as scape goats as we see with Obama's current policy where it is teacher's job to overcome social, economic burden of overburdened parents and neglected kids.

      •  Your hate is showing (0+ / 0-)

religion has nothing to do with kids inability to read, write or do math.
