    what the Republicans (whose chances will be greatly improved by Democrat Coakleying here) do with this bill.  There will doubtless be pressure put on the next Congress to get rid of the mandate.

      My hope is that, after observing that insurance rates continue to sky-rocket, the Dems will finally realize that it is in their self-interest to push through - via reconciliation in the Senate, no doubt - a robust public option like the Grayson Medicare Buy-In plan.  Absent that, there is a good chance that the Repubs will use this snafu to regain power and reverse the whole HCR bill (not just the mandate). Dems can't vote to eliminate the mandate, because this would result in huge premium increases for people who actually need health care (since they won't be subsidized by the people who don't).

        See Night Owl's analysis... at any rate Obama's stripped-down "plan B" doesn't have a mandate in it.
