  •  Where is value added in health care? (4+ / 0-)

    Where is health care created?

It comes from being able to see my primary-care doctor on a regular basis.

It comes from being able to get specialist care when I need to, from access to surgery and other sophisticated medical procedures like MRIs, pain management therapies, physical therapy, and so on.

It comes from access to the medications I need that help cure or manage diseases or medical conditions.

It sure as hell does NOT come from the middleman who shuffles paper, processes payment and acts as a gatekeeper.

There is an enormous amount screwed up with our health-care system, an enormous number of things that prevent the health care I described above from happening efficiently, humanely, for everyone.  We're not going to fix it in one pass.

Obama made a strategic decision to attack the least valuable part of the health-care process for the first step.  To accomplish this, he made deals with organizations that, while not ideal, are at least closer to the actual creation of actual health care.  I say that with full knowledge of the real and serious problems of for-profit hospitals and Big Pharma.   Even screwed up, they still operate hospitals and develop and produce medications.

I can live with that -- on ONE condition.  That this is ONLY the first step.  There is so much more to be done and no later than next Congress we need to continue the work of rebuilding our national health care system into something that actually provides, you know, national health care.

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all.
