    People at the start of the 20th century were captivated by the idea of speed... trains, planes, and automobiles. Now, as you noted, it's about computer and communications. The focus has moved from throwing things around (including ourselves) to throwing symbols around.

    I'm not convinced that overall transformation was more significant then, than now, however. My understanding is that health and lifespan improvements are rapidly accelerating at a global level these days.
