    that if they truly wanted to prevent abortions, they'd be on every street corner passing out free condoms and prevent-ovulation birth control pills to anyone who wanted them.

    The rank-and-file pro-lifers have been sold the idea that this is all about keeping babies from being killed. But those pulling the strings in the background could care less about whether tiny bits of tissue survive. (Have you ever heard a one of them call for fertility clinics to be closed? Clinics where hundreds of thousands of fertilized eggs are discarded each year? Could that be because such clinics are big business and have clients that can afford to pay thousands of dollars per procedure?)

    This is about keeping women in their place. The ability to decide when or even if to have children has been the biggest impetus to women's rights in the history of the world, giving women the chance to compete in so many arenas with men...and those who have the power and money can't stand that thought. "Keep 'em barefoot and pregnant" isn't just for's just another way that those in power make sure that only those who are just like them can be members of the club.
