There's a reason we don't have a pure democracy, but rather a representative democracy.  At some point you have to call a third-line vote, and this is/should be one of those.

When has Glenn Nye voted in our direction on any issue that was close?

      Based on what?

      His voting record?

If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck,  shoot it.

thanks to you can see the front of his website from 2008.  Here is a lovely snippet:

As a diplomat and international development consultant, I have worked to serve my country and share the best of America -- the dream of accountable government and an economic system that yields broad prosperity. But lately our leaders have drifted away from our core values in our approach to the world, alienated friends, and neglected to make the investments in America that will strengthen us at home and ensure American leadership over the coming decades.

Washington is torn by partisanship and focused on the wrong priorities. To change course we need leaders who will think independently and work for practical solutions to real challenges. That's why I am running for Congress.

It's time for America to once again be the country the world looks up to. America should lead, and we will lead -- we will lead in providing access to affordable quality healthcare; we will lead in educating a society that will compete in a global marketplace; we will lead with American ingenuity in creating alternative energy sources; we will lead in investing in our infrastructure; and we will lead in creating economic prosperity for all.

I hope you will join me and be a part of this campaign. Together, we can fix Washington and help change our country so it works for all Americans.

He voted against health care, will vote against it a second time, he voted against cap and trade, and I think has voted against pretty much everything contentious.

His message was in line with Obama's - he knew he needed to ride Obama's coattails to upset an unpopular incumbent (popular party, unpopular person).

Then as soon as he got elected he votes with the Republican leadership on everything other than, I suppose, the Speaker of the House.
