  •  Problem for Dems, no real benefits til 2014. (7+ / 0-)

From now until 2014 people will see their insurance costs go up by 25% a year and will be asking where are the benefits of the health care bill.  Because there's no alternative to private insurance people will see is increasingly costly health insurance and will blame the health care bill. Benefits between now and 2014 are minor reforms on private insurance that will only affect a few people running into the problems of limits, cutoffs, etc.

So the GOP's selling of repealing the bill in response to voter anger over higher costs and no public option alternative will be "no pain" political ploy.

Repealing it is not going to happen while Obama has veto power but all GOP wants is an issue with angry voters with high insurance bills.

Democrats would be smart to pass Grayson's Medicare Choice bill as an outlet for the anger over rising insurance costs.

    •  Unfortunately, I think you're right. (6+ / 0-)

I don't even think the ink will be dry on this bill before insurance companies start upping rates into the stratosphere. In fact, it's beyond obvious that this is going to happen.

That rates are controlled by state insurance commissions will keep these attempted rate increases somewhat in check, but the collective view may be that health care reform simply isn't happening for people's wallets . . .

      •  Dems should pass Grayson's bill as insurance. (4+ / 0-)

Insurance for their political survival. I think all we are going to hear is about big increases in health insurance premiums.

It will be worse than the Wall Street profits and bonuses because now people are actually paying out of pocket for the health insurance corporation profits and bonuses and they'll blame the health care bill.

Public anger won't be wrong as protecting public from insurance company rip off was key to reform and that is not in the bill.

Passing Grayson's bill doesn't cost anyone anything. People choose or not. It would seem an easy sell in Congress.

Without Grayson's Medicare Choice option voters are likely to take out the anger of 50% higher health insurance bills on Democrats.
