The poll asked people first about their party ID as between Democrat, Republican or independent (randomly switched in order). Then it asked those identifying with one of the two parties if they considered themselves to be strong (D or R). If the initial response was "independent" then the respondent was asked if they nevertheless "leaned" toward one party or the other. This sequence of questions has been used for over three decades and is considered the gold standard by which party affiliation should be identified. Unfortunately it takes more time so many otherwise reputable polling firms use short cuts or shorter questions to get this data and in doing so fail to uncover the voter's likelihood to vote for one party or the other's candidates.
