The Republican insiders will take down Palin in a way that will make what they did to McCain in 2000 look like a gentlemanly disagreement. Palin has the mob, but she doesn't have the connections or the big money.  She has no support among the people who matter.

Huckabee is a non-starter.  His base is regional and shrinking.  He is useful because he hurts Palin and isn't a threat, so he will stay in for awhile.

Romney is the man, because it's his turn, but they know Romney is probably going to lose, which is why he can have it.  He's the Republican John Kerry.  But like Kerry, he will lose respectably and prevent a down ballot disaster.

The Senate will be the focus of the GOP in 2012.  Plenty of vulnerable Democratic freshmen will be up and the Senate will be the easiest target for the Republicans.

Jeb ain't stepping up until 2016.  He gets to clean up the bloody mess from the Florida fratricide, then sells himself as the man to unite the party.

I think that Jeb is relatively smart and will try to resists the temptation to run in 2012.  But I really think the healthcare angle takes Mitt out of the equation.  Whoever he runs against will murder him with those clips.  And I think it will alienate him with the base-which makes "losing respectibly" harder for him than for someone who can at least turn out the fundies.

I can see Palin winning Iowa and NH being a six-way split and then the party is going to have to turn to someone.  It's  not a deep bench that they have.  Jeb might take one for the team.
