    McCain was like Bob Dole:  A respectable face of the party to prevent a downballot meltdown in a year where the GOP was likely to lose.

    Specifically, McCain's job was to put up a respectable, Bob Dole-like showing against Hillary Clinton. Despite all the heated rhetoric that the base has thrown at her, the insiders and the country club Republicans had accepted a third Clinton term. But the Democrats didn't cooperate.

    And, well, neither did McCain.  McCain is a pain in the ass to the insiders, not because he is a liberal, but because he is a loose cannon.  He was not supposed to pick Sarah Palin.  His maverick ways gave the right a lot more credibility than they deserved, and more importantly, elevated her to national status and position of heir apparent
